Coach James H. "Blue" Earley

James H. “Blue” Earley taught and coached for 35 years within the Virginia School System (South Side HS-Danville), Virginia Seminary (Now Lynchburg College), Lynchburg, JEJ Moore HS (Disputanta), Bethel High School (Hampton) and Phenix High School-(Hampton).

”Blue”, as he was affectionately known, was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. He graduated high school from Dunbar High School ’38 (Lynchburg), Earned his Bachelors form North Carolina A&T State University and his Masters from New York University with degrees in French and Physical Education respectively. As a high school athlete, “Blue” Earley was a noted player on his basketball team as they won VIA State Championships and he was also named MVP during that time. During his College Career, “Blue” was named All-American in Football and Basketball, which later placed him as the recipient in the North Carolina A&T State University’s Sports Hall of Fame. He also played Baseball while at NCA&T. As a Coach and Teacher, “Blue” earned numerous “Teacher of the Year” and “Coach of the Year” awards. Coach James “Blue” Earley has recently been named as the recipient of the VIA Heritage Legends Hall Of Fame.

From 1957-1967, James H. “Blue” Earley was donned the positions of Jayvee & Head Basketball Coach at Phenix High School, which served the black communities in the city of Hampton. He was noted to have built Phenix High School into a Basketball Power unlike there had been in its history. He also served as Assistant Football and Track Coach during his tenure.

Coach Earley was the spearhead in bringing Baseball to Phenix H.S. and served as Head Coach for that as well.

These feats were in addition to his outstanding teaching positions at Phenix as well as being Sponsor of both the  Foreign Language and Gentlemen's clubs.

James Earley was not only an iconic figure at Phenix High School but also served as a mentor in the community. He served as the Director of the former King Street Community Center. He headed The Title I Parks & Recreation programs in Hampton, establishing vast relationships with community businesses in order to set up job opportunities for the area youth all while investing in their character and lifelong knowledge. “Coach Earley” had an astonishing rapport with all he came in contact with in the community. This was evident as upon the closing of Phenix High School as integration was presented. It was a unanimous request that he be deemed as the 1st Head Coach and Athletic Director of the opening of Bethel High School the new school of integration.

Coach Earley's love of giving to ALL youth and helping in the community never stopped and nor did the Community's love for him!
